Wedding Bliss

The deed is done. The fees have been paid, the license has been filed and just like that we are married.

Woo Hoo!

Saturday was a great day! It was a little touch and go for both of us earlier in the day - we were both so nervous that we felt like we were going to get sick. Luckly neither of us did.

We started the day with photos at 3 pm at the house "getting ready." We then headed to Mt. Vernon and the the Washington Monument (here in Baltimore) for some wedding party photos.

It was threatening to rain (sort of - the weather report said 50% chance for the entire day.) Thank goodness it didn't rain - although it was REALLY hot walking around in my dress outside.

We took a lot of good pics. At one point i got rust on my dress and my girls came to my rescue. Thank you ladies! (And Tide to Go pen!!)

We made it to Chase Court around 5 and took a few family photos and then I escaped to the bride's room to hide out until the ceremony.

I was still kinda nervous about the ceremony but i knew it would work out and it did! Our friend MB did the ceremony and it was GREAT! He really took the whole thing seriously and did an amazing job! I don't really know how to thank him enough.

The ceremony was a "land speed record" as the hubby ;-) would say. I think from start to finish took about 20 minutes. It was a fast 20 minutes. The entire thing just flew by and before i knew it we were done. I'm pretty sure I only took a breath about once a minute. (dress was a little tight.)

We took some more family pics during the cocktail hour and we were able to actually eat some of our appetizers.

We sort of fumbled through our first dance but it was WAAY better than if we had not taken any lessons at all.

Next we had dinner - yummy! I hope everyone had enough to eat. I didn't get to try any of the cheese. Darn.

Then we did toasts. My sisters was quite nice and the best man's was really personal and embarassed the hubby (aka Mr. Hokie). We opened up the dance floor, ate some cake, and before i knew it it was time to wrap up the party. WOW! It went by soooo fast.

I had a great time and i know Mr. Hokie did too.

Thank you to everyone who came! We are really glad that you were able to be a part of the big day!

Last Night as Miss....

Tomorrow is the big day. Just wanted to do a quick post to say that i'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I am also super nervous about the whole thing - although i am pretty confident that things will be fine. the weather looks kinda sketchy with 50% chance of thunderstorms all day. great.
If i'm am conscious i will write again on Sunday with a recap of the day's events.
Woo Hoo!

Secret Meetings

really. what is the point. I hate it. i think everyone has a right to know what is going on. This shit pisses me off. i need a new job.

"See you in September Jerry"

Looks like the House Appropriations Committee won't be getting anything done during the month of July... FUN TIMES.

Dream: Round 2

So... as I was trying to say earlier

9 days to go. I'm going nuts. I don't know if i'm going to make it.

I've been really flaky at work (i totally spaced and didn't remember to do a memo for the BOSS until the last minute) and at home. Just forgetting stuff.

Monday night I had another wedding dream - about food. I don't remember what the problem was but i remember being worried about the food.

Tuesday night I went to bed early at 10:15 pm since i had to get up early the next day to do the memo... I couldn't fall asleep b/c I things were running through my mind about wedding day logistics and all of the "to do" items for the day of.
Who is bring the liquor to the location? bringing it home?
who is driving D and I? driving us home?
who is bringing the picture frame?
who is meeting the vendors?
etc etc etc.
So i rolled over to look at the clock and it was 11:45 pm! AAAHHH! So i wrote everything down that i was thinking about and promptly went to sleep.

Today I am at work but i just want to go home. I have no meetings. I feel like crud. I think the margaritas last night might have something to do with that.....

Another Wedding Dream....

crap. i just wrote a nice long post and blogger just took a big dump and lost it. maybe i'll write it again later.

Dream Job....

what does that mean??

1:59:45

I got my official time: 1:59:45
I was 14th out of 20 in my age group (women 30 - 34) but I was 246 out of 281 finishers.
Splits are as follows:
Swim: 7:27
T1: 4:35
Bike: 1:08:36
T2: 2:24
Run: 36:43
I think i made good time on all except the run. I've done 5Ks closer to 31 min. I think this is really where i can improve on my time - also on my swim - i think i can lose those 27 seconds and shorten my transition times with better preparedness... My goal is to shave 6 minutes off my time the next race i do. Starting to look for one in early September....

I am alive

Unofficial time of 2 hours. Hopefully i should have my official time tomorrow. Race was 1/4 mile swim, 14.7 mile bike, 5K. Fun times. My legs are kinda sore and i'm really tired since i got up at 4:30 this morning but otherwise I am good.

Here are a few pics:

In the pool.....

Starting my bike ride....

Final hill of the 5 K to the finish line. Woo Hoo!

Bundle of Nerves

I am going nuts. I am a bundle of nerves - have been for the last week or so. I've got a nervous rash on my finger. I've gotten these before when i was in college and I was worried about finals. Great.
I am getting increasingly nervous about the wedding (3 weeks and 1 day) and I am SUPER nervous about my race on Sunday.
S.O. and I rode the bike portion of the tri last weekend. 15 miles. uuuggghhh. Once I got to the first BIG hill around mile 5 I totally lost it. I had to get off my bike and walk it up the hill. how depressing....
There were two other SUPER big hills around mile 8 and then one last beeeotch of a hill at mile 14. I was able to ride those hills but it was unbelieveably painful and scary.
At this point I just want to finish the race standing up. It is going to be hard.
To top it all off it is supposed to rain this weekend and I am scared to death of wiping out going DOWN the big hills. When I rode them last weekend I was going REALLY fast and I am inexperienced with riding in the rain. Fun Times. If I don't type again anytime soon it is because I broke my arms flying over my handle bars during the race.
I will post an update after the race.

Movies that take place in Congress

I am tainted forever. I assume a lot of people are this way when they see their profession performed up on the big screen. I really have a hard time enjoying movies that take place in Congress or have anything to do with how Congress operates because i find myself nit-picking every little thing and my mind can't help but recognize when something is totally wrong or wouldn't be done a certain way.
For example - I watched Evan Almighty over the weekend.
Evan is a freshman Congressman newly elected from New York. He arrives on the Hill - and parks in his assigned parking spot on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building. He enters the building to greetings of "Goodmorning Congressman Baxter" from everyone he passes. He enters his palatial office and meets his Congressional staff for the first time. Apparently he only knows his office manager (Wanda Sikes - who is really funny) and his COS - Although he identifies his title as "Legislative Assistant" but I have NEVER met an LA over 40 and this guy looks like he is at least 45....
A few minutes later the LA carries in a 2 foot stack of paper - a bill he says - that the Senior Member from Wherever wants him to "Junior Co-sponsor" and he expects Evan to READ the entire bill over the weekend!! HA HA HA!!! This is too funny! Everything about this is ALL wrong and therefore taints my viewing experience.
Becides nit-picking my way through the movie i really did enjoy it - quite cheesy with a very strong pro-environmental bend - but it wasn't a bad way to waste an afternoon.

Third Wedding Freakout

Last night I had a dream that my DJ died and we didn't have one for the wedding. It was really wierd. I was sort of half-awake/asleep and I remember thinking "is this a dream? Did he really die?" and in my dream state i kept coming to the conclusion that he did. UUUggghhh. It wasn't a plesant dream.
5 weeks to go from today.
Also - just got the RSVP from the BOSS. He is coming.

Top Chef

I have a few draft posts i'm working on but i wanted to get this out there before I forgot about it.

On Top Chef last week Andrew uttered the following classic quote, "I have a culinary hard-on right now."

I think that is one of the funniest things I have ever heard on Bravo. Andrew was kicked off at the end of the show....

So Sue Me...

(originally drafted on 5/16)
I don't like horse racing. I am soooo tired of hearing about Preakness (tomorrow). This is a barbaric and archaic sport that i hope goes the way of the dodo. (the same with Dog races, bull riding and really any other "sport" that forces animals to compete with each other - although i don't have an opinion on polo b/c i'm not clear on the role of the horse other than transport....)

The political leadership in MD wants to legalize slots in MD so that we can save the MD racing industry and have more funds for "education." I'm sorry - i don't buy it.

1. industries evolve - some die off - some grow. Let this one have a quiet death without putting it on life support by encouraging people to gamble MORE than they do already.

2. gambling profits are unreliable and inconsistant and bring a host of other problems that we will be force to spend money on (addiction programs, additional police presence at gambling establishments, etc.) If our Governor and General Assembly leadership think that we need more money for education then here are a few suggestions i have for raising those funds:

um... increase taxes. No one likes this BUT at least it is a legitimate way for the government to raise revenue (rather than taking advantage of people who like to throw their money away)

Increase taxes on.... let's see.... why not cigarettes? (I know it is a regressive tax on lower income people but HEY - no one is forcing them to smoke) How about alcohol? Same thing. And i've been known to enjoy a beer or glass of wine (or 5).

What else can we do... we can stop giving HUGE tax breaks to developers to build gigantic condo buildings only to have them sit below capacity for 15 years... How long did it take before Harbor View was at full capacity??
I guess I could go on but it would just make my ulcer worse.

Just say NO to slots in November.

Second Wedding Freak Out

(Originally drafted on Thursday, 5/8)
I had my second wedding freak-out this morning. If you don't already know this about me some might say that i obsess about certain things. One being my ability to adequately plan ahead and be prepared... A little OCD about a few things. So, for my wedding invitations I was hardcore about making sure I had the correct postage. Dad worked at the post office and warned me that he had to give some bad news to some brides b/c they didn't have the right postage on their invitations. I knew that b/c I was over 1 oz and the envelope was not a standard size (it was square) that I would have to pay more for my postage.
In the days leading up to mailing the inviations I went to the post office THREE different times and had the guy weigh it every time and factor in the cost for the irregular envelope -and everytime i went he told me that it was going to be 75 cents. So I bought a bunch of 75 cent stamps.
So.... Significant Other and I stuffed, sealed, and stamped all of the invitations and I took them to work with me this morning. I stopped in at the Union Station post office since i didn't want to carry them across the Hill to my office - and after waiting in line for about 5 minutes - and with a long line behind me - I asked the lady at the counter to confirm that I had proper postage on the envelope. She said....
No!
She said that I was 22 cents short. I asked her if she was serious - yes she said. I told her I had 67 of these envelopes and that I couldn't deal with this right now - and I left.
On the verge of tears and quietly trying to calm myself down so that I totally don't start screaming I walked across the Hill to my building. I went to the post office in the basement of my building and handed the guy the envelope. I asked him if I had correct postage. He said 75 cents "should" get them to their location. Huh? I was soooo drained and I didn't want to deal with it any more - so I said fine - and handed him all of my invitations. Hoping upon hope that the lady at the Union Station post office was just mistaken.
UPDATE: 5/12: so.... apparently i was 22 cents short - FOR SOME OF THE INVITES but not for all. What could be the cause of this? I asked my dad who said that i was probably right on the verge of going up to the next ounce (22 cent increments) and that some of the scales at the destination post offices might be "off" and therefore SOME of my invites might be 22 cents short.
Of course it is totally random and I have no way of knowing whose invitation this will impact. This lovely situation occured with my fiancee's parents - they got a notice from the post office that there is an envelope waiting for them "postage due" and that if they want to get it they need to go to the post office and PAY 22 cents to get the freaking invitation. SERIOUSLY! This also happened with my aunts and uncles in Wisconsin - but not for folks in Baltimore or DC.
VERY UPSETTING but there is nothing I can do..... I will just need to call people in a few weeks and ask if they are going to come or not. I doubt I would go to the postoffice to pick up a postage due envelope.
I suck.

I wish I had Time

There are a lot of "good" movies coming out soon that I'd like to see - the problem is that S.O. and I only go to the movies about twice a year. Given what's coming up it looks like we will end up seeing more than two this year. We usually only go to action movies in the theater and then wait until other stuff comes out on tape (DVD). We will see at least a few of these in no particular order:
Incredible Hulk (I love Ed Norton!!)
the new Chronicles of Narnia movie: Prince Caspian
the new Indiana Jones movie (I know Harrison Ford is like 70 years old - but he is still not difficult to look at - but he is showing his age a bit in the movie poster - a little chubby and wrinkly)
X-Files
the new Batman
the new Mummy movie
I'm seeing a trend here. All of the movies I want to see are sequels. Hmmm... does this mean that I have a lack of imagination or that the other movies coming out this summer suck? - again i do have a bias toward only seeing action movies in the theater....

I Hate Read Receipts.... and other email issues

I hate read receipts. What is the point. If someone doesn't get back to you or it is an important email - write them again - or heaven forbid you call them personally.
Also - what is the deal with "message recall." It's not like the message will disappear from my in-box. all you do when you recall a message is draw attention to the original message that you don't want people to pay attention to.

Wedding Dream # 2

So last night I had my second dream about the wedding... really it was about wedding planning. I spent the good part of Sunday evening finishing up addressing invitations and was thinking about all of the things we still need to do in the next week - finish getting addresses from people, print direction cards, figure out how much it will cost to mail the invites (non-standard envelope and 2 oz = approx .75 each - BUT the postal rates are going up in a week so we need to get these out the door soon), then figure out favors. I've decided I don't want to have any. I want to make a donation to a local charity.
My dream was basically just a repeat of what i spent all day doing on Sunday. Over and Over and Over. I was tired when i woke up. not fun. At least i haven't started freaking out. Yet.
Bridal shower is this Sat. I'm nervous. It is weird being the center of attention... i need to make sure i don't drink too much - as i've seen happen with other brides at their showers.
Super busy. Every weekend has something planned between now and the wedding. 9 weeks and 4 days to go.

Am I a horrible person??

originally written on 4/17 but due to technical issues I am only now able to post...
I hate standing on the train.
In order to avoid doing so I always hustle my butt across the Hill from Longworth to Union Station in less than 20 minutes so that I can get a seat on the train.
Assuming there are no train issues (mystery delays etc) I am always successful in getting a seat where I want.
Today was no exception. Left my office and was in the elevator at 5:35 and I had my butt in a seat at 5:53. 18 min. Not bad.
The 6:05 to Baltimore is ALWAYS crowded so for this train I hurried even a bit more than I do for the 6:40.
Everything was going as expected - I had my seat and was working on my soduko and the car started to fill. In a matter of 5 min the car was full and people were starting to stand and claim their "space".
At 6:04:45 one of the train conductors informs me and my seatmates (the other 3 people sitting next to me) that we need to get up b/c someone in a scooter needs to park in our area.
So we stand up and realize there is no where to go. The train is packed and people are even standing in the vestibule. Great. I successfully get my lean on against the folded up seat next to the door and that is where I am right now as I type this.
Now - in my mind there are a few things going on here.
1. We were sitting in the handicapped area and on the VERY rare occasion that someone in a scooter needs the seats we are bound morally, socially, and probably legally to get our butts off our hard earned seats to accomidate the handicapped.
2. However - after initial observation this particular handicapped person has ridden the train before and is familular with the general train customs - because of this I find it quite rude of her to show up at the train 15 seconds before we depart and expect us to get up when there are clearly no seats for us to go to.
I am irritated.
Am I a horrible person?

UPDATE 4/22: because of the above described situation I decided that I was not going to get displaced again if I didn't have to, so I got one of the individual seats near the door that is not in the handicapped area - and good thing I did b/c the same thing happened and folks had to vacate their seats for this same woman. At least this time the train wasn't as packed and I'm pretty sure they were able to find other seats - if not in our car then in the next car... fun times.

I Want to Believe

I am VERY excited about this. David Duchovny is H.O.T.!!!

'X-Files' movie title revealed

New "X-Files" film, due July 25, will be called "The X-Files: I Want to Believe"

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The truth is finally out there about the new "X-Files" movie title.

The second big-screen spinoff of the paranormal TV adventure will be called "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," Chris Carter, the series' creator and the movie's director and co-writer, told The Associated Press.

Distributor 20th Century Fox signed off on the title Wednesday.

The title is a familiar phrase for fans of the series that starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents chasing after aliens and supernatural happenings. "I Want to Believe" was the slogan on a poster Duchovny's UFO-obsessed agent Fox Mulder had hanging in the cluttered basement office where he and Anderson's Dana Scully worked.

"It's a natural title," Carter said in a telephone interview Tuesday during a break from editing the film. "It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. 'I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith."

"I Want to Believe" comes 10 years after the first film and six years after the finale of the series, whose opening credits for much of its nine-year run featured the catch-phrase "the truth is out there."

Due in theaters July 25, the movie will not deal with aliens or the intricate mythology about interaction between humans and extraterrestrials that the show built up over the years, Carter said.

Instead, it casts Mulder and Scully into a stand-alone, earth-bound story aimed at both serious "X-Files" fans and newcomers, he said.

"It has struck me over the last several years talking to college-age kids that a lot of them really don't know the show or haven't seen it," Carter said. "If you're 20 years old now, the show started when you were 4. It was probably too scary for you or your parents wouldn't let you watch it. So there's a whole new audience that might have liked the show. This was made to, I would call it, satisfy everyone."

Hardcore fans need not worry that the movie will be going back to square one, though, Carter said. The movie will be true to the spirit of the show and everything Mulder and Scully went through, he said.
"The reason we're even making the movie is for the rabid fans, so we don't want to insult them by having to take them back through the concept again," Carter said.

Carter said he settled on "I Want to Believe" from the time he and co-writer Frank Spotnitz started on the screenplay. It took so long to go public with it because studio executives wanted to make sure it was a marketable title, he said.

The filmmakers have kept the story tightly under wraps to prevent plot spoilers from leaking on the Internet, a phenomenon that barely existed when the first movie came out in 1998.
"We went to almost comical lengths to keep the story a secret," Carter said. "That included allowing only the key crew members to read the script, and they had to read it in a room that had video cameras trained on them. It was a new experience."

It's been one year...

So today is the one year anniversary of the tragedy at VT.
You know... emotional pain is an interesting thing. Why do we keep going back and forcing ourselves to remember and re-live painful events? Is this part of the healing process? I don't know.
I find myself looking for more stories about what's going on in Blacksburg today knowing full well that when i read them or watch them on TV I am going to get emotional. Why am i doing this to myself?
I really don't want to go to work today. Just too tired - drained.

A New Word I Can't Stand

(from Wikipedia)
Webinar: A webinar is a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way, from the speaker to the audience with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be very collaborative and include polling and question & answer sessions to allow full participation between the audience and the presenter. In some cases, the presenter may speak over a standard telephone line, pointing out information being presented on screen and the audience can respond over their own telephones, preferably a speaker phone. There are web conferencing technologies on the market that have incorporated the use of VoIP audio technology, to allow for a truly web-based communication.

In the early years of the Internet, the terms "web conferencing" was often used to describe a group discussion in a message board and therefore not live. The term has evolved to refer specifically to live or "synchronous" meetings.

Update

I did pretty well in the Cherry blossom race. 1:44. Not bad for 10 miles. I think my pace was a little faster than the half marathon last October. My knees were killing me by the end of it. And it was cold and rainy - but i still had a good time.
Now i'm focusing my training on my triathalon in June. Fun times.
Wedding update: I am going for my dress fitting on Saturday. yea.
Not much else to say. I want to take Wednesday off from work and just spend all day in bed if possible... but not likely to happen. I have a meeting Wed afternoon.
S.O. is going to New Orleans this coming weekend for his bachelor party. I hope he comes home in one piece.

I Almost Forgot to Mention...

I am running in the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10-Miler on Sunday. Woo Hoo!
Training hasn't been going as well as hoped. I've been doing the Tri thing but that means less running and more spinning and swimming.
I think i'll be ok though. I ran the half-marathon (13.1 miles) in 140 minutes (2:20)which is the max pace for this race and it is only 10 miles. So, if I maintain the same pace as I did for the half (a little less than an 11 min mile) then i should be done in about 110 minutes (1:50).
The race starts at 7:50 am so I am going to spend the night at my friend's apartment the night before - otherwise i would have to leave baltimore at the ass crack of dawn which i really didn't want to do. Anyways...
Good Luck to me. I'll let you know how i do.

40th "Anniversary"

So, today is the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I don't like using the term "anniversary" b/c for me the word represents something good - and using it in this context doesn't seem right.
I had a moment this morning... I don't really know how to explain it... I think it may be a combination of a lot of different things. Stress from work, wedding planning, life.... I was thinking about this guy Zach Sowers in Baltimore who died last week after being attacked about 10 months ago in Canton. His new wife and friends created a blog to document his progress and their battles with the legal system in Baltimore. (All of those involved will be out of jail in 8 years or less and will not be charged or retried for murder since he died. WTF!) I digress... so I was thinking about this guy and his wife and how it really could have been any one of us who these kids targeted...
I've been thinking a lot about the people who were murdered at Virginia Tech almost a year ago...
I have a tremendous amount of respect for my father and always wondered why he never voted - Mom always did and always took us with her when we were little. When I was in high school I asked my dad about this and he told me that when JFK was killed in '63 and then MLK and Bobby Kennedy were killed in '68 he just stopped caring. He felt that the government let him down and that there was no real reason to vote b/c those people that he supported were not supported by their own governments and anyone worth a damn wouldn't/couldn't be elected....
So, this morning I had the Today Show on as I was getting ready for work and they did a piece on MLK and then they started playing his "I Have a Dream" speech and I just started crying.
It just all came out at once.
My profound sadness for what our country COULD HAVE BEEN TODAY if MLK wasn't killed. My sadness that my dad feels our government is worthless. My sadness about Zach Sowers - a guy I never knew. My sadness about what happened at my "HOME" - Virginia Tech...
I don't know. I don't really know how to explain it. Just sad.

More Overheard on the Train: "kirked out"

I think i have mentioned this before but it gets me everytime I hear it....

Some guy on the train said he "kirked out" on someone the other day.

I always thought this saying had to do with a guy I know named Kirk but apparently not. A quick search on Google for "kirked out" gave me 928 hits and the first one is from the Urban Dictionary: Kirk: To go crazy, to flip out, to wig out. "Timmy kirked out when he saw the guitar solo."

Who knew?

I am a slacker....

yes yes yes... this will look very similar to my last post. i only wrote once in the entire month of February and it is already the 3rd week in March and this is my first post...

sorry.

I do have some new stuff to report and new train/commute rants to post and i PROMISE i will get to them soon.

First a general update: work is slow at the moment now that approps season has come and gone (at least until july when my bill will be on the floor). Things will pick up again next week as the FBI and Attorney General will be testifying before my Approps committee. I am sure that my boss and the committee members will have something to say to the FBI Director and Attorney General Mukasey...

Home life: going well. really need to clean out the garage. we need to get two cars in there pronto before people start moving into the new condos down the street this summer.

March Madness: I am tied for 12th but I could possibly come in second place at the end of it all if things go my way.

Wedding plans are on-going. Taking dance lessons. Fun times.

More Train Stuff - but also a life message

It has been a while... I've been busy just like everyone else but I guess that's no excuse.
On the train this evening (originally written in mid-March) some schmuck sits down across from me and takes up both seats - he's not fat - he's just stretching out and flopping the tail of his coat purposefully across the other seat. As more people board the train he makes small jestures to move his coat and scoot over as people approach the seat. Several minutes and people pass him and that seat and proceed further into the train.
I'm watching this with some amusement. Sometimes I like to keep time on how long it takes from the time a schmuck sits down to when someone finally asks them to move off the other seat so they can sit.
It typically is about 5 minutes but this can be impacted by how early the schmuck gets on the train. I've seen it go to 15 minutes before - BUT every time someone has eventually taken that other seat. It is pretty funny. The other thing is that I will purposly take that seat even if there are other unimpeaded seats in the general area because it pisses me off that these guys think they can just spread out and take up more space than they need, deserve, or have paid for.
I've gotten some quizzical looks - no one has ever gotten mad - but they sort of look at me funny... Anyways - back to the current schmuck.... Someone finally sits next to the guy and the train starts moving.
So this guy is sitting here in a seat with his back to the end of the car and the train wall to his right side. A southbound train passes us at high speed and WOOSH - this side panel in the wall comes unlocked and totally swings for this guys head. The girl sitting next to me was able to grab it at the last minute so it didn't actually hit him. Then they together spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure out how to lock the thing back up. Pretty funny.
The moral of the story is "don't be that guy."

Fuck You Very Much

People are full of shit. Seriously.
Yes - thank you for protecting that special seat next to you.
Your story that the occupant was in the bathroom was not convincing - especially when he showed up 5 minutes later OBVIOUSLY from outside the train and you lifted YOUR bag so he could sit there. Thank you beeeotch. I hope you enjoy his company.

Ok Ok

So I am one of the people called out by Capitol Swell for not updating my blog. Sorry - I've been busy.
So... what's new... let's see....
WORK: we are in the thick of appropriations season at work and my hearings start today so I am anticipating a few late nights in the next week or so.
TRAINING: i signed up for a new training program at the gym - a triathalon training program. In addition to running the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in early April I am going to do a sprint triathalon in mid-June. Sweet!
WEDDING UPDATE: we finally booked the DJ and the florist. We are now looking at invitations and working on scheduling a meeting with the caterer for a tasting and to pick our linens, etc.
HOMELIFE: is good. D and I are doing well. Had a lovely V-Day dinner at home and have been hanging out with friends (very few band gigs in Feb). Sister is getting settled in Hawaii. Mom is looking for retirement communities in Florida.
That's it for now. I will write something interesting later tonight...

People are stupid

upon seeing this barrier at the train station a woman came up to me and asked if that meant that we were not supposed to go on that part of the platform... seriously...

From the Washington Post

I like this article. Although i only fly 2 -3 times a year at the most, i think i want one of these....

Clearly, Some Are DifferentA New ID Lets You Skip The Line at the Airport. But Just How Fast Are You?

By Hank StueverWashington Post Staff WriterSunday, January 27, 2008; M01

Two of Washington's airports -- Dulles and Reagan National -- will soon be part of the federal government's Registered Traveler program, which offers passengers the happy prospect of getting through security lines faster, swifter, better. (Ninety thousand of them and counting have enrolled.) All you need do is pay an annual fee -- $100 to start, plus a $28 shakedown so the government can make sure you're, you know, okay. Next you submit all sorts of personal information, fingerprints and, because the future is now, an eyeball scan.
Then you are all clear.
In fact, the company that clears you is called Clear, and once you're good to go, they mail you a clear plastic ID card with a square blue logo that says Clear. ("The wait is over," proclaims the company's slogan.)
The mind immediately goes either way on this, first to a dark place: Depressingly, America potentially becomes still less like "America," where everyone was supposedly equal, no matter how bad things got. It's the "Lexus lane" syndrome over and over, where special people buy special access to get ahead of the losers. And yet, hasn't this been the essential human narrative all along? Me before you. People becoming Clear is simply another chapter in the self-deterministic struggle. Ayn Rand would totally have one.
After that comes a more tantalizing thought: Can we get a Clear card for everything else?
Some pre-Clears (if you'll excuse the Scientology undertones) have been waiting for this -- impatiently, of course. Clears are already the fastest people at airports even without the cards: shoes and coat off, laptop out of the case, X-ray buckets lined up on the conveyor belt, waiting for everybody else to get it together.
A few thousand people in the Washington area have already applied, and on a recent weekday, 35 people visited the American Express office downtown at 15th and K streets NW, to get cleared by Clear, says Clear spokeswoman Cindy Rosenthal. "What we hear most from people is that they want predictability," she says. "These are people who don't like waiting on line."
Clears are the simple and speedy people, who tend to know the price of things before they get to the register and always have the cash or debit card ready, and step out of the way immediately to a place where they can put away their change and receipt and reassemble themselves without obstructing the flow. Clears do not dig into their purses in search of engorged wallets into which they go a-huntin' for six cents so as not to break a bill, or to look for that Subway sandwich stamp card. Clears have amazingly uncomplicated business to do at banks and in post office lines -- places they almost never go to anymore -- conducting transactions so fast the teller or clerk barely has time to wish them a good day. Clears tend to order only sodas in movie concession lines. (Clears also get to movies 20 minutes early.) Clears have written pamphlet-length diatribes in their minds about a certain drugstore chain that rhymes with "Skeevy Mess" and the lackadaisical inabilities of not only its incredibly slow employees but its equally slow customers.
So why stop with airports? Clear is already thinking about that. "Major crowd events, like a 60,000-person football game," Rosenthal says, could be conducted more efficiently with Clear cards.
Clears are sometimes confused with "high-maintenance" customers, when, in fact, it is low maintenance that defines the true Clear. (Clears have doubtless eaten their share of the kitchen staff's spit for only suggesting that things could be going faster.)
Clears can give you a very long lecture about the economic concept known as opportunity cost, which is just another way of saying time is money, so why clip coupons?
Beyond a swift exchange of pleasantries, Clears never make chitchat with cashiers, because there are people in line behind the Clear, and the Clear is doing them the favor of clearing out. They almost never cause malfunction of the process, and are never more disappointed in themselves as on the rare occasion when they do take too long. Clears almost never special-order or substitute menu items, and are quietly horrified when their dining companions do. Clears love stores with names like Grab-N'-Go, or Git-N'-Gone, and long for the day when such establishments can honestly and consistently live up to such ideals. Corporate America invented self-checkout lines for Clears, which worked well for about five minutes, until someone who wasn't a Clear caused yet another human paper jam.
There is only one long line Clears accept, and that is the line to vote.
Clears come in all ages, but they get more Clear the closer they get to 40. (And less Clear after 60. You can always tell an old Clear by his polite resignation: Go ahead, all of you, he or she says, as the plane is disembarking. I'm just slowing you down.)
So far, the people who run Clear have only learned the obvious about their customer base: He is a he, a business traveler, and he's generally between 35 and 45 years old, Rosenthal says -- adding that the profile may change as Clear lanes open in other airports. He is affluent and may have a second home. He isn't merely antsy-pantsy. He just flies a lot and is sick of the lines. Clear gets him through airport security in about four minutes. In high-tourist travel markets -- such as Orlando or Denver -- he never knows if the security lines are going to be a matter of a few minutes or an hour, which makes him bonkers with Clear worry. One Clear customer, Rosenthal says, forgot important papers in his car and was able to cross back out into the terminal, retrieve the papers from his secretary, and go back through security in a matter of minutes. This is held up as the definitive Clear success story: zip, zip, zip.
Life, meanwhile, is not as zippy as all that. A Clear finds himself standing in line at a 7-Eleven, with a Big Gulp in one hand and a couple of dollar bills in the other, and realizes that he's going to have to wait for six Un-Clears in front of him to buy lottery tickets and the exact pack of cigarettes that the Un-Clear clerk cannot seem to locate. Shouldn't a Clear's Clear card work in this situation? Shouldn't a Clear be able to go to the front of the line at Starbucks when all the Clear ever orders ( ever!) is a simple grande coffee? If a Clear knows exactly what he wants in the Au Bon Pain or the Taco Bell, can he not flash his Clear card and grab-n-go, git-n-gone?
Not in America. Not yet. The Clear gets his airport privileges (and so far, he gets them only in airports like Albany or Indianapolis -- but also Newark and JFK at certain hours and certain gates), and he gets the nasty looks, too. Clears are sometimes troubled by this. They aren't so self-absorbed as to not feel true remorse and class consciousness. It's not like a country club or a gated neighborhood or first class. Clears encourage clarity in all people.
Here's the rub: The world is ending. Things are getting tight, desperate, short. Clearness is coming to airport security lines just in time for chaos to wipe out everything. Clears are good at things like mass evacuation, but not so great in soup lines. (Just listen to how loudly and repeatedly a Clear sighs when the express lane at Giant is too long.)
In the apocalypse, it's a good idea to stick close to your favorite Clear, but you should also fully expect to be left behind.

More Adventures in Baking

here is my frankenstein pie - supposed to be strawberry rhubarb but ended up being strawberry-cherry. I think it tastes better than it looks - and it only took me 3 days to make (b/c of my unsuccessful search for rhubarb).

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

I had a great Christmas and New Year's Eve! I was able to spend the holidays with my family and also with D's family. NYE we had a party here at the house. We had a great turn-out.

One of my favorite presents I got this year is this Kitchen Aid Mixer. D's mom got it for us. She wasn't sure what to get us for Christmas so she just bought something off the wedding registry. Hey - that's cool with me! Also I am including a sampling of the tasty treats I have made using my new mixer.

My New Mixer

Rum Balls

Sugar Cookies

Thumb-print Cookies with Jelly Filling

VT.... what are we going to do?

We have been to 3 BCS Bowl Games and have lost all of them. I'm sad but I think we will be ok. There's always next season. I'm going to start saving for the National Championship in Miami on Jan 8, 2009.

Trying to run again....

I really tore myself up with that half-marathon 3 months ago. I ran 4 miles this morning and thought I was going to die...

My Birthday Present

My friend S. gave me a lovely birthday present. It is a bulb in a pot. I planted it immediately when i got home on 12/16. Here is what it looks like today. YEA!

FINALLY!!!! My Crazy Cat!

Just click on the play button!

To heat or not - that is the question

So... Capitol Swell says that it is bad to keep pastries and croissants under a heat lamp but that muffins are ok.
I disagree. I think we need to break this down even more.
There is a fundamental difference between pastries with filling (fruit or dairy based) and pastries without filling. (Also please note - bagels and donuts are not included in this discussion.)
Pastries with filling can really hurt you if they are hot. I have burnt my tounge more than once on a poptart.
Pastries without filling such as muffins AND croissants are better when warm. This is a fundamental truth.
I'm not sure what else I need to say about this.

My turn at the helm...

Well... it has been a while since it was my job to hold down the fort until last votes. I guess it could be worse. It looks like i will get out of here by 8 and hopefully be on the 8:40 train. I was hoping the boss would tell me to just go home - but no dice. Honestly - if we worked until midnight today and tomorrow just so we don't have to work on Saturday I totally would. Working on the weekends is BS. There should be no need for it. Of course, now that we are going to vote on a CR that will take us to 12/21 then maybe there isn't a need to work on Saturday. I hope so.

My Birthday

I turned the big 31 the other day. Woo Hoo. No one cares when you turn 31. Last year was cool b/c we had a huge party and everyone was there and I had a great time. This year was still nice (got a great present from S.O. - going to see Ave. Q @ the Hipprodrome) but a lot less exciting. I guess every birthday can't be a huge party... S.O. and I had a lovely dinner at Pazza Luna and then went out for drinks with N & C at Captain Larry's. I can't wait for the smoke ban to go into effect. My clothes smelled like ASS. I had to leave them in the hallway b/c i didn't want them stinking up my bedroom. 50 days to go. Ban goes into effect on February 1, 2008. Gosh i can't wait!

Vick Sentenced

So, Michael Vick was sentenced in federal court yesterday to 23 months and 29 days in jail for his crimes. I don't have much to say about this other than I understand b/c of sentencing guidlines that it was unlikely he would get less time than his "co-defendents" but it still makes you think about what is wrong with our judicial system when someone convicted of RAPE and MANSLAUGHTER against a HUMAN BEING gets less time in jail than someone who committed crimes against ANIMALS. I love animals. I think Vick got what he deserved - But i also think that we need to seriously think about increasing the penalities for crimes committed against humans - rather than lowering them for crimes against animals.
I pretty much agree with everything in the following article.

The Sentence Reflects the Lies

By Michael Wilbon
Tuesday, December 11, 2007; E01

ATLANTA -- It caught most of us by surprise, the length of the sentence handed down Monday, when perhaps it shouldn't have. When two of his co-conspirators were sentenced a few weeks back to 18 and 21 months respectively, we should have known Michael Vick wasn't going to get a year or 15 months. He wasn't going to get less jail time than the people who delivered him to the feds. He wasn't going to get less jail time when it was his money that financed the dogfighting enterprise that was his undoing.

Maybe we were caught by surprise because we thought there was still a little bit of influence left in Vick's name, because he reported to jail before it was time, because he's a celebrity athlete and we're accustomed to most people in the culture being lenient when it comes to the rich and famous, or perhaps because the St. Louis Rams' Leonard Little got only 90 days in the city workhouse and four years probation for killing a motorist when driving while drunk, which turned into an involuntary manslaughter plea.

The talk turned, very prematurely we can see now, to whether Vick could be back for the 2009 season, maybe even by minicamp that spring. Clearly, none of this mattered to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who sentenced Vick to 23 months in a federal prison. It was a stunner to digest, from the time assessed to the fact that Vick was dressed in black-and-white prison garb instead of one of his own suits, which a whole lot of hardened criminals are allowed to wear to sentencing. Immediately, it seemed downright excessive and meant to embarrass. More serious crimes yield smaller sentences all the time, every day really. In fact, the entire reaction to Vick's heinous behavior at times has seemed excessive in the context of crimes like rape and manslaughter.

Mike Tyson was convicted of rape, yet he and his crime didn't generate anything close to the outrage of the Vick case. I have no tolerance for what Vick did, from financing the enterprise to actually killing dogs. Jail is where he deserves to be. But have we really come to the point, agitated by the frighteningly influential animal rights lobbyists, where an animal's well-being is more important than a woman's? It's sad if our priorities are that twisted. The reaction to Vick's crime reached a feeding frenzy that seems to ignore all context.

I was reminded by multiple lawyers Monday night, one in my own family, that it needs to be restated that Vick's crime was a federal offense, carrying mandatory sentencing guidelines. There was virtually no chance he'd receive less jail time than his co-conspirators. And it's a near-certainty that Vick, once again, made his own situation worse by lying.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank, drained by the day's ordeal before the start of the Falcons-Saints game, told me just before kickoff that, from all the information he solicited, Hudson "is incredibly thoughtful, bright and fair. And there's information we weren't privy to that drove him to his decision on this." It was impossible to not see the disappointment on Blank's face, like a parent who is angry with his child but in despair nonetheless. On the topic of whether the sentence was excessive, Blank lamented that "Michael had been something less than forthcoming since his plea agreement."

In other words, Vick simply lied too many times. He lied about whether he actually killed any dogs, then admitted to hanging two. Testing positive for marijuana certainly hurt. Vick failed an FBI polygraph and lied about a positive marijuana test in September. In fact, Hudson told Vick in court Monday afternoon, "I'm not convinced you've fully accepted responsibility."

In other words, the early surrender, the public apology, the participation in an animal sensitivity training course might have impressed PETA to some degree, but it was not enough for the judge to outweigh Vick's constant lying, going all the way back to the spring of 2007 when he lied to Blank and to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about the depth of his involvement. Vick was denied an "acceptance of responsibility" credit that could have reduced his sentence. Reportedly, federal prosecutors opposed giving him the credit.

In other words, every time Vick could have done himself some good, he lied or failed to take responsibility for his actions. Seeing that, Hudson nailed him.

It's fair to wonder now at what point Vick will take responsibility -- and not in some phony public relations way. This doesn't have anything to do with the NFL and what the commissioner's office thinks. It doesn't matter to me at the moment whether Michael Vick comes back as a quarterback or a running back, to the Falcons or Raiders, or whether he comes back at all.

For essentially the next two years Michael Vick will be incarcerated, not free to come and go as he pleases. At some point you have to hope Vick comes to realize the key to his future isn't what Hudson thinks, or what Blank or Goodell or those who will excuse him any act feel, but whether Vick understands that it's going to be difficult to build any kind of tolerable future without coming to grips with his recent past.

Pooped On - AGAIN

look, i'm not crazy. They really are after me. We had a fire alarm pulled in my building this morning and so i went across the street to another building and just hung outside under the awning for the "all clear." As i'm waiting i get pooped on. AAAHHH!!! At least I was wearing a hat - but still - how gross.

I am not imagining this. They really are after me. It's happened before....

Trying to get back into it....

I've been starting to run again. It is taking a really long time for me to recover from the half-marathon. It's been almost 2 months and i an only now starting to get myself back together.
My knees and ankles are killing me.
On Sunday I ran to the Fort and 2 times around before I had to head home (it was freezing cold!) This morning at the gym I ran 4.4 miles in 50 minutes (starting with a 2 minute walk, ran 20 min, walked 2 min, ran 25 min, walked 1 min). I really wanted to go further but my legs were killing me. I'm going to try again Friday morning and see how i do.
The Cherry Blossom 10 miler is coming up in April. Sign-up is next week. I really want to do it.
We'll see.

YEA VT!

We beat Boston College in the ACC Championship Game and we will be playing Kansas in the Orange Bowl on January 3rd. I was attending a baby shower at the same time the game was on so I didn't see much of it. It was on the TV but the sound was low and with so much going on during the party that it was difficult to focus on the game. I did hear the last 5 minutes or so on the radio on my way home. YEA! We are going into our bowl game ranked # 3 in the country!! How awesome is that!

Go VT!

We beat UVA today. YEA! They took the lead once for a few minutes but then we came back and kicked their behinds.
Next Saturday at 1 pm we will be playing Boston College for the ACC Championship. Sweet.
The only thing that sux is that I won't get to watch the game. I will be attending a friend's baby shower - which is occuring at the exact same time. I plan to TIVO the game but i doubt i will watch it unless something really crazy happens. I've given S.O. a pass so that he can watch the game instead of attend the baby shower (it is a coed shower).
He owes me big time.

Hokies win Coastal division with 33-21 defeat of UVa
Tech gets rematch with Boston College in ACC title game
November 24, 2007
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Looking for an ACC title game bid with a slim two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Virginia Tech Hokies scored 10 unanswered points in the final period to clinch the ACC's Coastal division and punch their tickets to Jacksonville, earning a 33-21 win over rival Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Scott Stadium.
With the triumph, the No. 8 Hokies (10-2, 7-1 ACC) secured a rematch with Boston College in next Saturday's ACC Championship game, which is set to kickoff at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Tech also recorded 10 wins for the fourth consecutive season, beat the No. 16 Cavaliers (9-3, 6-2 ACC) for the eighth time in nine tries, and improved to 15-1 in ACC road games since joining the conference four years ago.
"We need to give our seniors a lot of credit," Tech head coach Frank Beamer said after the victory. "I think they are the first group to get 10 wins in all four years, and to beat a team like Virginia all four years is an accomplishment, too. The turnovers kind of got us in trouble but you've got to live with those. The big plays kind of got us, but we made some big plays ourselves.
"I'm proud of that too," Beamer said of the 15-1 road mark. "I always preach that it doesn't matter where you play, when you play or who you play; we need to play the same way with consistency. I think we have kids who like the challenge of going into a visiting stadium and taking the crowd out of the game."
Statistically, Tech tailback Branden Ore broke out with his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season, tallying 147 yards on 31 carries. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor recorded 17 yards on nine carries including two scores, and in the highly successful two-quarterback system for the Hokies, Sean Glennon enjoyed another solid day, completing 13-of-19 for 260 yards and a touchdown. Split end Josh Morgan hauled in four balls for 75 yards, while flanker Josh Hyman caught four for 63. Defensively, Cam Martin registered nine tackles, while Vince Hall, Brandon Flowers, Chris Ellis and Barry Booker each made seven stops. Five of Booker's tackles were for a loss.
Virginia Tech opened the game with some trickery after forcing a Virginia punt. On the return, Eddie Royal pitched the ball to Justin Harper on a reverse, and 43 yards later, Harper was out of bounds at the UVa 41 with great field position for the Hokies. An 8-yard run by Branden Ore was sandwiched by a pair of catches by Royal - a 16-yarder from Glennon and an 8-yarder from Taylor - before Taylor took the ball into the end zone from nine yards out to give Tech a 7-0 lead at 12:12 of the first quarter.
The Hokies increased their lead to 10-0 on their next possession, when at 5:47 from 20 yards out, Jud Dunlevy hit his first of four field goals on the day to cap a 12-play, 65-yard drive that lasted 5:23.
"He's been a big part of our football team," Beamer said of his kicker, who now has 21 field goals on the season, one shy of the school record of 22 held by Shayne Graham and Chris Kinzer. "He's been solid as a rock."
The Cavaliers countered on the ensuing drive to cut the margin to three. On third-and-10 from his own 28, UVa quarterback Jameel Sewell connected on back-to-back 22-yard passes - the first to Maurice Covington and the second to Jonathan Stupar - to the move the ball to the Tech 28. After another 1-yard completion to Stupar, tailback Mikell Simpson busted up the middle for a 27-yard touchdown run at 2:37. Chris Gould's PAT made it a 10-7 game.
The Hokies didn't waste much time getting Dunlevy back into field goal range, as 1:53 later with 34 seconds on the first-quarter clock, he drilled a 37-yarder to give Tech a 13-7 lead. The drive was keyed by a 56-yard bomb from Glennon to Royal on the opening snap, and was one of six catches for a career-high 147 yards in the contest for the senior flanker.
Royal and the Hokies tried to continue their creativity on their first possession of the second quarter, when Royal attempted a pass on another trick play. His pass was under thrown and picked off by UVa's Chris Cook, who returned it to the Tech 48. Seven plays later, Sewell ran it in from eight yards out and Gould hit his PAT to put the Cavaliers on top 14-13 with 6:35 left in the half.
The Hokies, however, were able to get the momentum back right before the intermission. Virginia was again threatening in Tech territory when Brandon Flowers jumped Sewell's pass with a diving interception - his fifth of the season - at the Tech 35. After a 26-yard completion from Glennon to Josh Morgan, Royal made up for his miscue by hauling in a 39-yard scoring pass from Glennon with 12 seconds remaining for his third touchdown catch of the year. Dunlevy's PAT gave the Hokies a 20-14 lead at the half.
"It was the game plan - we saw a match-up that we liked and we kept going at it," Royal said of his big day. "That's why I came to Virginia Tech - to make plays like that. [On the touchdown], the ball almost knocked me down it was such a good throw. That play was all Sean Glennon."
Dunlevy's third trifecta of the game was set up when freshman Davon Morgan blocked a punt from the UVa 38 that the Hokies recovered at the 26. It was just the second blocked kick of the season for the Hokies, with the last one coming from Stephan Virgil on a punt in the Duke game. Dunlevy extended the Tech lead to 23-14 at 7:51 with a 29-yarder.
The Cavaliers' final score of the game, like its second, was set up by a Hokie turnover. This time, UVa's Chris Long sacked Glennon and forced a fumble that was picked up by UVa's Antonio Appleby at the Tech 28. Seven plays later, Sewell battled into the end zone from the 2-yard line for his second rushing score of the day. Gould's PAT at 2:51 made the score 23-21 and kept the outcome in doubt heading into the final period.
The Hokies erased that doubt, however, with 11:50 remaining when Taylor rushed for his second touchdown of the game to cap an eight-play, 68-yard drive. His designed draw up the middle was denied on third-and-goal from the UVa 5, but the freshman improvised and beat a Cavalier defender in a foot race to the pylon to give Tech a 30-21 advantage.
Dunlevy set the final score with a 26-yard field goal at 4:26 to set up Tech's battle with Boston College, which stole an improbable 14-10 victory from the Hokies at Lane Stadium back on Oct. 25th.
"Now that we've got 'em, we've got to figure out how to beat 'em," Beamer said of the rematch with the Eagles for all the marbles. "That's a big ballgame for us, but it's the one we worked so hard to get to. Now it's time to take care of business."

The Wedding Biz: A Complete Scam or A Complete Sham - You Be The Judge!

FIRST - WTF? What in the heck is this ridiculous thing? A pink flask - this is marketed as a bridesmaid gift (can be personalized). AAAHHH!! This is what's wrong with the wedding industry. Slap the color pink on it and the word "wedding" and you are good to go! you can sell anything this way...

I digress....

S.O. and I have been planning the wedding in earnest over the last few months and let me tell you... it has been a very eye-opening endeavor.

Add the word "wedding" to any product and immediately add 25 - 50% to the price of whatever it is you need to buy: party invitations or wedding invitations; party DJ or wedding DJ; photographer or wedding photographer. Ridiculous.

I've been trying to be as low maintenance as possible through this whole process and I've been trying to do this "my way." Which is to say - carefully, logical, and thorough. Unfortunately the wedding business is not set up this way - I am being thwarted at every turn in my efforts.
Wanting to do this "my way" or be an "unconventional bride" is quite difficult.

The industry conspires against you the moment you say "yes." I tried from the beginning to avoid BRIDAL SHOWS but was unsuccessful. We needed a florist, photographer, and DJ and thought that "wouldn't it be a great idea to go to the bridal show and kill three birds with one stone in one afternoon."

S.O. and I were able to pick a location and a caterer on our own and thought we were doing pretty well without delving into the seedy underworld of BRIDAL SHOWS but we took a chance.
OH MY GOD! From the moment we walked in to the moment we were able to escape it was the most horrifying moment of my life.

As soon as you walk in the door you have to check in at the front desk - this involves filling out a form with all of your contact information and some really fine print that i should have read. (i now get at least 3 fliers A DAY in the mail trying to sell me wedding crap.) Next you are assigned a number and you get a sheet of paper with your number printed on it 100 times. What you are supposed to do is then for every vendor you visit you put your number in a little box and at the end of the day (5 pm - must be present to win) each vendor chooses a number and that person wins a prize! Yea! AAAAHHHH - the first thing i did was throw my numbers away. While we were there looking for a florist, DJ, and photographer - it seemed like all of the other brides (most of whom were about 5 - 10 years younger than me), moms, and girlfriends were there for EVERYTHING. Caterers, Cakes, Jewelry, Dresses, etc. They even had department stores getting people to register for gifts and banks to help people sign up for mortgages. Thank god we were late and "missed" the wedding dress fashion show.

S.O. was one of about 10 males in the place that wasn't a vendor. It was quite a painful afternoon. We left with a bag full of fliers and other crap that got thrown away as soon as we got home.

Through this process I have learned that the entire wedding industry is based on the following assumptions: (this list is in no way complete)

1. the average age of a new bride is 23.

2. the engaged woman has been "dreaming" about this "special day" since she was 10 and knows exactly what she wants.

3. the traditional rules still apply and that the bride's family will pay for almost everything and therefore it is OK to have ridiculously inflated prices

4. That women become retarded as soon as we get an engagement ring on our finger and lose all rational thought

5. That every wedding couple wants the standard wedding format complete with a "tossing bouquet" and a DJ with props

6. That the groom has no opinion on anything and whose only role is to show up

I understand that assumptions are necessary if you want to serve the greatest number of people - the problem with these assumptions is that the industry is ignoring a certain part of the population and their inflexibility makes doing this any way other than the "standard way" quite difficult.

First of all, I am a 30 year old bride who HAS NOT been dreaming about this day since i was 10. When I was 10 I was imagining that I would be the first woman astronaut on Mars and that I would have a really cool job and make lots of money. I can honestly say that I don't remember EVER imagining what my wedding would be like (i did assume that i would get married however.)

Second, I am a 30 year old bride who will be paying for ALL of this herself (along with her spouse.) No parental help here. It would be nice if people in this business didn't assume that my parents are paying for ANYTHING let alone ALL of it.

Third, because there is no financial assistance from the parents I am certainly going to make rational decisions about what I am going to spend my money on. Sure a $2000 wedding dress is nice - but so is a $800 dress, etc, etc, etc.

Fourth, In this partnership the groom is as involved in the decision making as the bride is so please AT LEAST acknowledge his presence in the room when we are having a conversation about flowers, music, etc.

.... So.... fast forward a few months... it is now mid/late November and the horrific experience of the bridal show has finally stopped haunting me. We still need a DJ and florist. We have interviewed 4 florists and received a proposal from one - should get two more soon and another one by the end of next week. We are pretty good on the florist front.

We have interviewed two DJs and decided that we need to meet with at least one more to feel like we have a good idea about the range of prices and types of DJs. Having forgotten the bridal show expierence a few months ago we decide that it would be a good idea to go to a "wine and cheese" showcase event at Martin's West and meet another DJ and their company.

The company hosting the event, "The Pros," are a "full service" wedding vendor. They have DJs, videographers, and photographers.

The event was last night - 2 days before Thanksgiving. The event start time was 6:45 - we got there around 6:55. The "Pros" were not there and were stuck in traffic. Lovely. They were coming from PA (where their corporate HQ is) and there was an accident on 95 S. So much for "Pros". We got some cheese and a glass of crappy merlot and wandered around the room looking at photo albums of people who probaly have no idea that their wedding is being used to sell a product.

Around 7:30 they announce that the "program" will being in about 5 minutes. OK great. If they didn't start by 7:45 we were outta there. The program started at 7:35 with a really crappy "stand-up" introduction by the Baltimore/Washington, DC manager. He sucked. He tried to be funny. It was starting to get uncomfortable.

After a few minutes of wedding jokes about how grooms are stupid, and moms getting emotional, and how there always someone at the reception who drinks too much, the guy introduces the head douche-bag in charge of operations - head sales schmuck. This guy's job is to tell us about the different services they provide and why their company is better than the other guys. EVERYTHING that came out of this guy's mouth was a sales pitch designed to sound like a sappy story that would (hopefully for them) make you realize that you ABSOLUTELY had to have a videographer and that without a video your kids and grandkids will hate you for it.

I really needed a drink but the wine was so crappy that it wasn't worth getting up.

When this guy was done he passed the mic back to the manager who proceeded to introduce the 6 DJs that were there. Apparently the company has 30 local DJs but only 6 were able to come to the showcase.

After the first DJ was introduced they each introduced the next DJ - i think this part was supposed to show us a how each DJ spoke and sounded. 4 of the 6 were total mush mouths and had to read the introduction of the next DJ from a card. Not a good first impression.

After all of the DJs were introduced the manager started to play some music and they (the DJs) started to do the Electric Slide - to music that WASN'T the Electric Slide song. They did that for a minute and then started to pass out leis in the audience. This was one of the little things they did during receptions to get the guests involved.

Guests are supposed to pass the leis around and when the music stops whoever has one gets a prize. yea. So we pass the leis around and at this point the evening went from "uncomfortable" to "really bad".

So they stop and start the music a few times and of course there is no "real" prize - they just tell a stupid joke... Then the last time the music stops they said whoever has the leis really DOES get a prize - they "get" to go up on the dance floor and be their "party people" for the next few songs. AAAAHHHH!!!! Thank GOD neither of us had a lei. It was at that moment that the evening went from "really bad" straight though "god awful" and directly to "Most Horrifying Event - Worst Than The Bridal Show."

We took that moment as an opportunity for escape. We got up and left. We couldn't have gotten out of there fast enough. We hopped in the car and drove away as fast as we could. We couldn't shake the stink off. It was just too disgusting and weird.

After thinking about it for a minute i realized that the "showcase" was not the right sales pitch for us. Maybe that is the best way to sell your product to those people who fit the basic assumptions about people who are getting married - but it DEFINATELY was not the best way to sell your product to us. I am still traumatized. And we still need a DJ....

PS: take a look at the Comments Section. Pretty funny given what i just wrote about the industry. Does this guy really want me as a customer???

Dog Killer

I am still unbelievably disappointed in Michael Vick. It just kills me when I see people with such great talent (football, art, music, whatever) fuck it up by doing something ridiculously stupid. Part of is jealously on my part for wishing I had some sort of great talent. He has talent. He was a great football player - admittedly more so in college than in the pros. Still. He was a great figure that we could all support. Watching him play in person at Lane Stadium was one of the coolest things ever. Then these horrible charges come to light and we learn who the real Michael Vick is. Someone who has no regard for the lives of other living animals. Dogs (and cats - holla!) are part of our families and our lives. People spend ridiculous amounts of money on their pets every year on toys, food, health care, etc. That is why what he did is so horrible. It isn't the same as cockfighting or bull riding (although i don't support either of those activities either.) Anyone who has that level of disregard for a dog is just a short slippery slope away from feeling that way about a person.

The great number 7 turned himself in to the authorities today to start serving his sentence (whatever that might be) - three weeks before his scheduled sentencing hearing.

Let's hope that he learns something while in jail. But what is done is done. He will never be the same in my eyes. If I owned a Vick jersey I would have sent it to the ASPCA just like all of those other former fans. I am so disappointed...

Vick surrenders early to begin dogfighting sentence
Story Highlights
Sentencing set for December 10 on dogfighting charges against Michael Vick
Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty in August
Monday, he surrendered to begin whatever sentence he gets on December 10
He faces 12 to 18 months on charge of running dogfighting ring from his home
(CNN) -- Michael Vick turned himself in to authorities on Monday to get a head start on serving his sentence for running a dogfighting ring, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback is scheduled to be sentenced on December 10 on a federal conspiracy charge of bankrolling the dogfighting operation.
Vick, 27, voluntarily turned himself in around noon, said Kevin Trevillan of the Marshals Service, and is being held at Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia, until the sentencing hearing.
The quarterback, who has been suspended indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, faces 12 to 18 months in prison on the charge.
He pleaded guilty in August after three associates admitted their own roles in the operation and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
On September 25, a Virginia grand jury indicted Vick and the three co-defendants -- Purnell Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Quanis Phillips, 28, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Tony Taylor, 34, of Hampton, Virginia -- on state charges of running a dogfighting ring at Vick's home outside Newport News.
The Surry County grand jury brought two charges against the four men: one count of unlawfully torturing and killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Each is a felony charge that could result in a five-year prison term.
In addition, Taylor faces three additional counts of unlawful torture and killing of dogs.
A hearing in that case is set for November 27, but Vick does not have to be in court at that time.
In September, Vick was put under tight restrictions by the federal court after he tested positive for marijuana use.
Vick tested positive for the drug on September 13, a court document from the Eastern District of Virginia shows.
As a result, U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson ordered Vick to "submit to any method of testing required by the pretrial services officer or the supervising officer for determining whether the defendant is using a prohibited substance."
Those methods could include random drug testing, a remote alcohol testing system "and/or any form of prohibited substance screening or testing," the order said.
Vick was also ordered to stay home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., "or as directed by the pretrial services officer or supervising officer," the order said. He was to be electronically monitored during that time.
Vick must participate in substance abuse therapy and mental health counseling "if deemed advisable by the pretrial services officer or supervising officer" at his own expense, the order said.

Revenge....

I hate Miami. I am glad that we kicked the crap out of them earlier tonight. And like I said, we need to beat UVA next Saturday to go to the ACC Championship on December 1st.

Currently Boston College is playing Clemson. Whoever wins this game will also be in the ACC Championship. I hope it is BC. That way when we end up playing them in the big game we can give them a little pay-back for what happened on 10/25 when they beat us in the last 4 minutes of the game....

Revenge is a dish best served cold....

We Are.... Virginia Tech!

The "Hokies Thank the World" event brought together thousands of Hokies on the Virginia Tech Drillfield to spell out a message of thanks to the world in recognition of the global outpouring of support and love for the Virginia Tech community following the events of April 16. The message of thanks was recorded by ground, aerial, and satellite imagery and will be shared with the world for free through www.HokiesThankTheWorld.org. The event took place on November 17, 2007 beginning at 10:35am and ending at approximately 11:12am on the Virginia Tech Drillfield in Blacksburg, Virginia. check it: www.hokiesthanktheworld.org

by the way - VT kicked the crap out of Miami tonight - 44 to 14. We still need to beat UVA next weekend if we are going to play in the ACC Championship.

Movie Review: Anger Management

I got Anger Management starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson delivered from Netflix last week. S.O. and I watched it last night. I was not impressed.

I am a fan of Adam Sandler and usually like his movies (Waterboy - classic). This movie just didn't do it for me. Overall, it wasn't funny. There are a few (4) funny scenes in the movie and two of them involved the fat cat named Meatball. The third - in case you are interested - is when the Lawyer (Kevin Nealon) threw a tennisball at a blind guy in court to see how blind he really is. The 4th is when Woody Harrilson is dressed up in drag.... geeze. It has been a while since i wanted to turn off a new movie mid play. it really was that bad.

I can't wait to see what the next moviedelivered is...

Top 10 Worst Things People Do on the MARC

by popular demand....

10. Littering

9. Talking on the cell phone (esp. about personal stuff like what happend at the Dr.'s office earlier) for longer than a minute or two.

8. Arguing with the Conductor EVERY MORNING about why you would rather stand and why you refuse to move to the next car to find a seat

7. Tourists who bring their screaming children on the train and are surprised when there are no seats @ 6:38 pm for the 6:40 pm departure

6. People who bitch about how slow the train is and therefore are going to miss their 8:30 pm flight - of course this has noting to do with the fact that they decided to cut it close by taking the 6:40 pm train...

5. Toursits who take up two seats with luggage

4. Commuters who take up two seats with with coat/purse/briefcase, etc. This is worse than tourists b/c commuters know better...

3. All personal hygiene efforts except clipping/filing nails

2. Eating smelly food

and the number 1 worst thing that people do on the train is.......

1. Clippling/filing nails

Another Train Rant

if anyone is reading this i am sure that you get tired of my commuting rants but i just can't stop. This is how I blow off the steam. Otherwise you will see me on the news one day and the headline will be something about how a commuter went beserk and freaked out on a MARC train...

As i read my book and was waiting for my train to pull out of the station i became aware of an interesting smell. I looked up and.... literally 3 of the 5 people in my area were chowing down on junk food. And we wonder why people are fat. Just look at the people who ride my train - always eating bad food - McD's, Sabarro's, Auntie Anne's pretzles. Seriously - this can't be their dinner. It just grosses me out.

Eating on the train is on its way to making my list of rude train behaviors.

Also so is bringing luggage if it isn't on there already - who do you think you are? Did you purchase 2 tickets??

Trash Cans....

Yesterday someone stole our trash can. It was a nice can - pretty expensive - good quality on wheels with a nice handle and lid. I'm a little upset by this. We lived for 5 years in a part of town that some would consider not as "nice" as where we live now and not once was our can stolen... GRRR

Wedding Stuff, Date Night and Restaurant Review: Taste

Wedding Stuff - S.O. and I took the day off from work on Friday 10/22 and did wedding stuff. We had a 10 am appointment at the florist. We quickly learned that we were not prepared for this meeting and that we have a lot of work to do before we meet with another one. We need to figure out our "theme". I was under the impression that our wedding was the theme for the day, but apparently we need another one.... so i think we are going with "purple". So our meeting with the florist was a big waste of time for all involved. After the meeting we had lunch at Cross Street Market - Big Jim's Deli - one of the best club sandwiches in town (this will be the subject of a future post....)

After lunch we headed up to Towson mall to create our gift registries. We went to Macy's first. We were there for 4 hours! Painful! We picked all kinds of random stuff we don't need. Then we went to Crate and Barrel and did the same thing. Fun times.

We had dinner reservations for 7:30 but i pushed them back to 8:30 b/c it took so long to register.

Of course it was pouring down rain so D and I had to run through the rain from our car to the restaurant. I could have asked him to drop me off and park but i still would have gotten soaked. No umbrella. smart.

As soon as we entered the restaurant the hostess greeted us and started taking us to our table - soaking wet with dripping coats. I asked if we could stop at the coat check before we were seated. She seemed irritated but we walked the extra 4 feet to the coat check and got rid of our drippy coats.

We were seated upstairs along the main wall. A nice-ish seat (could have been better but it was obvious that they were not utilizing all of their "sections" b/c the place was half dead). In general our service was pretty good but our waitress seemed distracted - it looked liked she was being pestered by a new hire who was wondering where all of the customers were. Well... it was pouring down rain and one of the first chilly evenings in a while... More people showed up around 9 ish though...

Appetizers were GREAT! I had a scallop ceviche - scallops were the perfect texture and seasoned simply but there was no need for a lot. SO had the bacom wrapped shrimp and grits. In full disclosure I have never had grits before - these were AWESOME! great texture - not too mushy and the shrimp was wonderful.

We ordered a bottle of wine - recommended by the chef as one of her favorites - it was nice. Not too heavy with a nice fruity flavor.

I initially wanted to go to Taste b/c of the duckfat fries. I've read about these for a few months and really wanted to try them. They weren't on the menu so we didn't order them - BUT! I must have them! so when our waitress stopped by to check on us I asked her about them. She said they were on the bar menu. I promptly ordered us some. They came in about 10 minutes and they were very tasty! You could taste the grease but i don't know that it could be identified as "duck fat". Still... i want them again.

Our entrees were also delicious. SO had crab raviolli and i had the lobster tortillini. Both were served with a cream sauce but with different seasonings.

We got dessert but for the life of me i can't remember what we had. I'm sure it was good.

After we paid the bill we hung out in the bar area, had a few more drinks and listened to the live 3 piece jazz band that was playing. Pretty cool.

It was a good day.
